I want to start with a number and then leave it alone.
The second half of this century very likely holds the untimely death of billions of people. From heat, from collapsing ecosystems, from the wars and famines that follow. Fewer children are being born, so those who remain will carry more of it.
That’s the number. I won’t come back to it. You already know it. Most of you have known it for years. It’s why you read this letter and not another one.
I want to talk instead about what i’ve noticed in the rooms where people know it, because i’ve spent a long time in them.
Two kinds of necessary
I spent years in the diagnosis. How we got here, how the parts connect, why the obvious fixes don’t hold. That work is real. i wouldn’t be writing this without it.
And i spent years learning to trust. To hold all of it without panic, to listen, to let go of the fantasy that i could control the outcome. That work is real too. i couldn’t write this without it either.
Then at some point i looked around at everything i had understood and everything i had learned to hold, and asked a simple question. What have i left behind that someone else could pick up and use?
Not a paper. Not a feeling. A thing. Something that would still be standing if i walked away.
The answer was: not much.
That’s not a confession. It’s an observation about how our kind of work is shaped. Understanding doesn’t leave anything standing. Neither does trust. Both are necessary. Both are, by now, done to the degree that matters.
I wrote after my conversation with Gesine Schwan that our bubble has an analysis problem. Podcasts about the diagnosis, podcasts about the podcasts, and when you ask what actually moved, the answer is a gathering. I stand by it. I am about to invite you to a gathering anyway. Bear with me. The rules are different.
Nobody builds a civilisation
A life-serving civilisation cannot be built. What can be built are its preconditions. The things that have to exist before such a civilisation can grow. I call this its load-bearing layer, and i mean something specific by it.
Something is load-bearing if it does four things.
It enables many other things, not just one.
It doesn’t need everyone to agree before you can start. A small group can begin.
It is worth having whether or not the worst arrives. It’s not a bet on collapse. It’s a better way to live.
And it outlasts the people who build it. It is made to be handed on. Which matters more, not less, when there will be fewer hands.
The shape of it, by what each piece does rather than what it’s called:
A region that can produce its own materials, food and energy from sunlight and biology. Not as ideology. Nature already knows how. The question is scale.
A way for a region to keep exchanging food for labour and work for shelter when the currency it depends on isn’t available to it.
A way for a watershed to make decisions about itself, and to connect those decisions to other watersheds across the world.
Tools that let an organisation see where it actually stands against the planetary futures that are coming, rather than against last year’s budget.
And people who know how to build and run all of this.
Notice what each of these has. A unit. A plant, a region, a network of a few hundred organisations. A first day.
I called these infrastructures of generosity once. Same idea, fewer tests.
Building waits for neither
I’m not asking you to stop understanding. I’m not asking you to stop trusting. I’m asking you to notice that both are ways of waiting. Analysis waits for certainty. Trust waits for alignment. Building waits for neither.
The exercise, then. It takes an evening, not a conference.
Pick one precondition. Say what it does, not what it is. Name its unit. Run it against the four tests and be honest where it fails. Then write down one thing you will have built, or begun to build, by a date you also write down, that someone else could pick up.
Not a commitment to think about it. Not a commitment to convene. A thing.
