Last week, I attended a discussion at the House of Parliament in New South Wales, Sydney, focused on politics and the climate catastrophe. Unlike in Germany, where many people still underestimate the looming dangers, it is now clear to everyone in Australia how fiercely nature can strike back.
Zack Schofield from Rising Tide was one of the guests on stage and succinctly expressed the position of the movement he founded: "Dear politicians, we are giving you one last chance. If you can't get it right, we will take over."
Lately, I've been hearing statements like Zack's more frequently. They emphasize the fact that no major country in the world has succeeded in laying the foundations for a truly regenerative economy. This situation, combined with the rapidly increasing pressure on people, leads to frustration that manifests in various ways.
In Germany and Europe, this frustration is reflected in a strong shift to the right, as evidenced by the results of the European elections. It is a desire for a strong hand to finally address long-neglected issues. Understandable, but shortsighted, foolish, and ineffective.
The dynamics within the major and influential institutions of our society, such as politics and business, are shaped by the entrapment of the involved individuals in multipolar traps. There is no escape from these traps without losses. At the top of each multipolar trap is a person with a dark triad personality: narcissism, Machiavellianism, and psychopathy. Right-wing populist parties are particularly driven by people of this type, whose core motivation is personal power gain.
These circumstances present us with a massive challenge: On the one hand, we need to make our politics capable of action, but on the other hand, we must ensure that we do not slip into an autocratic system – all while our democracy is already damaged.
We see this challenge as an opportunity to upgrade our understanding of democracy. When the world's existing democracies were founded, technology and communication landscapes were fundamentally different from today. As a result, it was necessary for the sovereign – the people of the country – to be represented by elected officials. The Future Generations Wellbeing Act in Wales ten years ago made it clear that this is no longer the only solution.
We believe that the sovereign – all of us – should be able to set the goals for successful politics by describing how Germany and its people should live in the future. This enables the political arena to adjust the discourse to the actual desire for a good life and to focus on the best path to achieve it. Politics can thus avoid ideological trench wars over the best future and concentrate on implementation.
In the Initiative Regenerative Market Economy, we call this "New Prosperity" and will launch a nationwide campaign in Germany starting in August 2024. This campaign invites the public to jointly formulate a good future as the basis for good politics.
In doing so, we are part of a larger initiative that brings together the activities of various organizations. Our goal is to empower the sovereign – all of us – to position ourselves as a shaping force in German politics.
As a first step, we invite you – the sovereign – today to show yourself and everyone else that you are the sovereign by signing the following petition: [An Update for Our Democracy, Because You Are the Sovereign](https://www.openpetition.de/petition/online/ein-update-fuer-unsere-demokratie-weil-du-der-souveraen-bist).
While the concrete invitation is only relevant for people in Germany, i believe the general idea to be more than relevant for anyone living in an un-upgraded democracy.
